We welcome everyone to St Mary's at any time and especially during Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Please come and join us. Key services and activities are listed below.

6 March: Ash Wednesday
Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ

Lent leads us towards the cross. As the season begins, we are marked again by the cross with which we were signed at our baptism, a reminder of the death and resurrection of Christ. The ash is made by burning the palm crosses which were blessed on Palm Sunday last year.

Holy Communion with Imposition of Ashes at 10.00am and 7.45pm

7 April: Passiontide

Lent Lunch
A simple soup, bread and cheese lunch. All profits will go towards our Lent collection for WaterAid

14 April: Holy Week starts on Palm Sunday
Palm SundayServices of Holy Communion with blessing of palms at 8.00am and 10.00am
15-17 April: Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday
Holy Communion each evening at 7.45pm
18 April: Maundy Thursday

Liturgy of Maundy Thursday & Watch of the Passion at 7.45pm

We recall the meal Jesus shared with his disciples before his arrest, and his act of humility when washing the feet of his disciples. We also keep watch.

19 April: Good Friday

The Stations of the Cross

Using the Stations of our own church, this service provides space for reflection on Christ's journey towards his death.

Holy Communion

The bread and wine consecrated during the Eucharist on Maundy Thursday are offered in this beautifully simple service. A reminder that Christ's presence is with us, always.

4.00pm Creating the Easter Garden
Everyone's welcome to come and help in the creation of the Easter Garden. We'll be having hot cross buns afterwards too!
21 April: Easter Day

The most important day of the Christian Year. We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the gift of eternal life. Alleluia!


Easter Alleluia!

A simple, ecumenical service of early morning praise. Held at Berry Lane Open Space followed by coffee and hot cross buns.

Easter Day All-Age Communion

We light the new Easter Fire and the Paschal Candle. During the service, everyone is invited to renew their baptismal vows. After the servie we have the annual Easter Egg Hunt

22 April: Easter Pilgrimage to St Albans

Easter Pilgrimage to St AlbansKeen walkers leave early (8.30am) from St Mary's to get to St Albans, meeting other pilgrims along the way.

If you don't fancy walking, you can always meet up with everyone at the Abbey.

Lent study course

Live Lent: Let Your Life Shine is our Lent study this yearDuring Lent we are gathering together in house groups. We'll be using this year's Lent booklet LentPilgrim material which follows the Beatitudes.

Mondays at the Museum

Join Deborah on Monday mornings during Lent to explore art associated with the events of Holy Week and Easter. We'll meet at the Vicarage at 11.30am and look at the chosen piece of art as well as reading the associated passage of Scripture. Discussion and conversation will follow, ending at about 12.45pm. All are welcome to stay for lunch. Please sign up if you would like to come along.

Lent Appeal 2019

Water is essential for maintaining life, particularly in countries of persistent drought.

During Lent we will be collecting money to buy taps through WaterAid.

  • £34 buys two basins for nurses and doctors to wash they hands
  • £50 can supply training for a village pump mechanic
