It is with huge excitement and joy that we will welcome our new organist, Tim Smith, in September.

Tim has an extensive and impressive background in many areas of music. He grew up in Harrow and was a Junior Exhibitioner at the Royal College of Music. He then studied Music at UCNW Bangor under William Mathias.

Following a period working in music agency and concert promotion he trained as a teacher. Tim worked in primary schools in Hillingdon and Harrow as a music specialist for over 25 years and retired from classroom teaching in 2023. Through school projects Tim has been fortunate to work with musicians from the London Chamber Orchestra, Christopher Warren-Greene, David Hill, Bob Chilcott and members of the BBC Singers.

Tim spent nearly 20 years as Director of Music at St Mary’s Church, Harrow on the Hill. He is also co-founder/director of Kids Choir Harrow and, from September 2023, Musical Director of The Castle Choir, Berkhamsted. In January 2024 he was also invited to conduct the Phoenix Mandolin Orchestra, based in St Albans.

Tim has been a member of the London Area Committee of the Royal School of Church Music, he chairs the Harrow Deanery Choirs Association and is Chair of the Peter Hinkley Trust which supports the musical education of young people in Harrow. He is married with two adult children (who both sing!)

Tim was awarded the British Empire Medal for his service to education and music in the King’s Birthday Honours in 2024.

Welcome, Tim!

Meanwhile, we thank Andrew Sykes for his significant contribution to our worship as our organist for more than 20 years. We wish him and Ann well in the next stage of their lives.
